Eugene de Blaas
Austrian Academic Classical painter
born 1843 - died 1931

Also known as: Eugene von Blaas, Eugenio de Blaas.

De Blaas, a figure painter, was active in exhibiting between 1882 and 1907. Eugene de Blaas showed at the Royal Academy, Fine Arts Society, New Gallery and Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery in London, and also at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.

De Blaas lived in Venice, where Eugene de Blaas was a professor at the Accademia, and it was there that Eugene de Blaas met JW in 1880.

De Blaas' colourful and rather theatrical period images of Venetian society, e.g. On the Balcony (1877; Private Collection), were quite different to JW's delicate pastels and etchings of the courtyards, balconys and canals of modern Venice, although at times JW did show a similar concern for anecdotal detail.
