| As a boy, Brett was interested in both painting and astronomy, but in 1851 John Brett decided to take lessons from the leading drawing master of John Brett’s time, James Duffield Harding (1797-1863). In 1853 John Brett was introduced to Holman Hunt and in 1856 visited Switzerland, where John Brett met another painter on the fringe of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, J W Inchbold (1830-1888). Always inclined towards landscape painting, John Brett gained the attention and encouragement of Ruskin after exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1858.
