As a boy, Brett was interested in both
painting and astronomy, but in 1851 John
Brett decided to take lessons from the leading
drawing master of John Brett’s time, James
Duffield Harding (1797-1863). Whilst a
student at the Royal Academy Schools John
Brett was
deeply moved by the work of the
Pre-Raphaelites and the writing of John
Ruskin. |

In 1853 John
Brett was
introduced to Holman Hunt and in 1856
visited Switzerland, where John Brett met another
painter on the fringe of the Pre-Raphaelite
circle, J W Inchbold (1830-1888). Always
inclined towards landscape painting, John
Brett gained the attention and encouragement of
Ruskin after exhibiting at the Royal Academy
in 1858. Fascinated by the sea, John Brett turned
more towards marine subjects in the 1860s,
especially favouring rocky coasts. |
