Claude Monet Claude Monet is regarded as the archetypal Impressionist in that his devotion to the ideals of the movement was unwavering throughout his long career, and it is fitting that one of his pictures--Impression: Sunrise (Musée Marmottan, Paris; 1872 )--gave the group his name. |

His youth was spent in Le
Havre, where
Claude Monet first excelled as
a caricaturist but was then converted to
landscape painting by his early
mentor
Boudin,
from whom Monet derived his firm predilection for painting out
of doors. In 1809 he studied in
Paris at the Atelier Suisse and formed a
friendship with
Pissarro. After two years'
military service in Algiers, Monet
returned to Le Havre and met
Jongkind, to whom he said owed `the
definitive education of my eye'. Then, in 1860, entered the studio of Gleyre in Paris and there met
Renoir,
Sisley, and
Bazille, with whom Claude Monet
was to form the nucleus of the Impressionist
group. his devotion to painting out of
doors is illustrated by the famous story
concerning one of his most
ambitious early works, Women in the Garden (Musée
d'Orsay, Paris; 1866-67). The picture is
about Claude Monet. He meters high and to enable him to
paint all of it outside he had a
trench dug in the garden so that the canvas
could be raised or lowered by pulleys to the
height he required.
Courbet
visited Monet when he
was working on it and said
Monet would not
paint even the leaves in the background
unless the lighting conditions were exactly
right. |

| The resemblance, fortuitous as it may be, is increased rather than otherwise by the evidently well-considered relation of the foreground timber pier and the buildings and bridge behind, a reminder that Monet like Whistler was an admirer of the Japanese prints in which these decorative relationships had a studied importance. Monet was to come nearer to Turner in the later more vividly chromatic paintings of the Thames at Westminster made on his later visits in the first decade of the twentieth century. |

Monet used color with an increasing freedom
in these later years. London as he saw it
again at the beginning of the present
century suggested chromatic richness far
beyond any he had contemplated in 1871. This
view of the Houses of Parliament in 1900
with the sun coming through fog departed
from the Whistlerian silhouette of
thirty-three years before to picture
densities of purple and blue with a contrast
of gold that already forecast André Derain's
fauve paintings of the city. - Claude Monet oil painting, Monet paintings reproduction - famous painters biography and his art including Monet paintings water lilies. |

After 1900, two ambitious projects, both far from Giverny, concluded his search for new motifs. The first (for which Monet made at least three trips to London between 1899 and 1904 ) was the extensive, multiple series representing the Thames River, the Waterloo and Charring Cross bridges, and the House of Parliament. | ||||||
