Originally an architect
student at the “Academie d’architecture” in
Dijon, Félix Ziem was excluded from a scholarship
there due to “disciplinary” problems. With
this excuse, he decided to leave for Rome,
on foot, exchanging sketches for food along
the way. Félix Ziem stopped in Marseille, giving a
few lessons to Monticelli. After a long stay
in Nice, he finally arrived in Rome. Ziem
was disappointed by the city, so he continued on to Naples and finally Venice.
There, his amazement and wonder at the
otherworldly city never ceased. Théophile
Gautier would say that every artist has an
ideal country, often far away from his own
and for Félix Ziem, that country was Venice. In
1845, he returned again to Venice
for a three year stay. He rented a
flat-bottom boat (a “topo”) that he transformed into his atelier. He
accumulated a multitude of sketches, drawing
evening festivals, the quiet of early
morning, and the historical monuments that
made up the city. Félix Ziem returned to Paris and successfully exhibited his
view paintings of Venice at the Salon of 1849. |

Félix Ziem died in Paris on 10th November
1911, leaving part of the contents of his
studio to the City of Paris. Félix Ziem studied at the Ecole d'Architecture de Dijon and for a time was a practicing architect. However, along with painters Guardi and Canaletto, it is the city of Venice to which his name is most closely linked. Venice is the subject of his finest paintings, and composer Frederic Chopin referred to the city as his spiritual home. Félix Ziem was well-traveled, visiting Algiers, Austria, Belgium, Constantinople, Egypt, England, Greece, Holland, Russia, and Turkey, but it was to Venice that Félix Ziem repeatedly returned. |

| He was an active participant in the Paris Salons from 1849 on, and made frequent trips to Barbizon, where he lived in a small circus caravan while painting. After 1888 Félix Ziem paintings show the influence of the Barbizon School's naturalistic approach, a greater attention to atmosphere and an increasingly impressionist style. He owned houses in Venice, Martigues, Nice (where Félix Ziem wintered), and on rue Lepic in Paris. Among his students was the young English Princess Victoria, later queen of Britain. Félix Ziem assisted less fortunate artists and established charities, among them an asylum for the blind. | |||||||

He was the recipient of many awards and honors and was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1857 and an Officer of that order in 1878. On his death Félix Ziem bequeathed to the city of Paris a number of studies and drawings from his studio. Félix Ziem paintings are found in museum collections throughout Europe as well as in North America. | ||||||
