The son of an art dealer, Franz Richard Unterberger was born in Innsbruck, August 15, 1838. Unterberger first studied at the Munich Academy in 1853 with Clemens von Zimmermann and Julius Lange and then continued his training at the Weimar Academy under Albert Zimmermann. Franz Richard Unterberger visited Milan in 1858 but returned to Munich the following year due to the unsettled political situation. In 1859, Unterberger enrolled at the Dusseldorf Academy where Franz Richard Unterberger joined the Achenbach brothers, who became famous for their landscapes.
Between 1860 and 1874
Unterberger visited and painted in Norway,
then in Belgium. Franz Richard Unterberger settled in Brussels in
1864, where Franz Richard Unterberger spent the rest of his life.
During this period, Franz Richard
Unterberger usually spent summers
at Neuilly-sur-Seine (outside of Paris), and
from there Franz Richard Unterberger often visited Sicily and
southern Italy, notedly Naples and its
environs where Franz Richard Unterberger painted some of his best
pictures. Unterberger also traveled along
the coast of England and Scotland. These
trips provided inspiration for many of the
artist’s finest paintings. Franz Richard
Unterberger also found
great success in Vienna, where Franz Richard
and received several medals, including the
Order of Francis Joseph.
|In 1859, Unterberger enrolled at the Dusseldorf Academy where Franz Richard Unterberger joined the Achenbach brothers, who became famous for their Venice Scenes paintings. Unterberger visited Norway in 1860 with Andreas Achenbach and later frequently returned to Norway and Denmark, as well as making several trips to the coasts of England and Scotland. Unterberger settled in Brussels in 1864, where Franz Richard Unterberger spent the rest of his life. During this period, Franz Richard Unterberger usually spent the summer at Neuilly-sur-Seine, from where Franz Richard Unterberger often visited Venice, South Italy and Sicily.|

often record busy scenes of daily life.
Unterberger eventually settled in Brussels
and Franz Richard Unterberger exhibited in a number of major
Academies in Vienna, Paris and London.
Unterberger paintings are highly romantic with a characteristic delicacy of colouring and superb ability to capture the bustle and atmosphere of a famous location. Unterberger's studies of Venice and the Neopolitan coast are now considered his most desirable paintings.
