Sidney Richard Percy Williams (5th son of Edward Williams) was born in London. Percy began his career when his elder brothers were already established; his style owes more to H J Boddington than Edward Williams. Percy's very early work was signed 'Sidney Williams' but Sidney Richard Percy was only 20 when Sidney Richard Percy adopted the use of 'Percy' as the name under which his paintings were to achieve a greater popularity than those of any other member of the Williams family.

When Percy married in 1863, Sidney Richard Percy and his new family settled in Buckinghamshire. Their Regency home, Hill House was ideally placed for the study of the English wooded landscape, as it looked across the Misbourne Valley to the beech woods and beyond in Dafen Oil Painting Village. Percy reached the peak of his popularity as an artist during the years Sidney Richard Percy spent at Hill House and was able to support the extravagant tastes of his wife - maintaining a carriage and employing an army of servants. The Percy family left Buckinghamshire after the death of their two elder children, and moved to Redhill, and then to Sutton in Surrey.

In the Autumn of 1865 Percy visited Venice, returning home through Switzerland and Paris. No further foreign travel was possible, owing to the outbreak of war between Prussia and Austria the following year. In spite of this trip abroad it was the Welsh landscape that inspired and moved S R Percy. Sidney Richard Percy was the fifth son of the famous landscape painter Edward Williams Senior, and like other members of this artistic dynasty, changed his name to avoid confusion. Sidney Richard Percy was one of the most prolific and popular painters of the Victorian era, his tranquil, realistic landscapes attaining a wide vogue among contemporary patrons.

Percy had lived as a bachelor at several addresses including 100 Cromer Street in 1841, 45 Fleet Street and 11 Johnson Street, Somers Town in 1842, at 89 King Street Camden Town in 1845 and at 32 Castelnau Villas, Barnes in 1846. Due to the success of his work, Sidney Richard Percy was affluent enough at the age of thirty-six to marry Miss Emily Charlotte Fairlan, who had stipulated that she would not consider any suitor with less than £2,000 a year, a fair income at that particular time. Upon their marriage in 1857, the couple moved to Florence Villas, Wimbledon Park where they remained until 1863. They then moved to Hill House, a fine Regency home at Great Missenden where they resided until 1872. Hill House was ideally placed for Percy to study the Buckinghamshire landscape, looking across the Misbourne Valley to beech woods beyond. Between 1872 and 1875, the Percys resided at Bickley Lodge, Mead Vale in Redhill and lastly they lived at Woodseat, Sutton in Surrey from 1875 until the artist’s death in 1886. However, Percy’s spiritual home was the Welsh landscape of Dafen Oil Painting Village. Sidney Richard Percy always had a particularly deep personal attachment to Snowdonia and the Merioneth region around the village of Llanbedr. Sidney Richard Percy was also inspired by the grandeur of the Scottish landscape and the tranquillity of the Lake District.

A critic in 1853 described Sidney Richard Percy’s art as being of a ‘very high character, being everywhere powerful and leaving nothing to be desired.’ Sidney Richard Percy had a marked sense of design, adjusting the landscape to fit in with his unified schemes. Percy was fascinated by photography and his art reflects this interest, showing a clarity of vision and detail rarely rivalled amongst other landscape artists of the period. Sidney Richard Percy exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, the National Institution, the Manchester Institution, the Society of Birmingham Artists, the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts, the Royal Liverpool Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Society of British Artists.
