Sebastiano Ricci was born in Belluno and is considered a
member of the Venetian school, but before
Sebastiano Ricci settled in Venice in 1717
Sebastiano Ricci led a
peripatetic life, working in numerous
Italian cities (Bologna, Rome, Modena,
Florence, and Parma) before going to Vienna
where Sebastiano Ricci worked in the Schönbrunn Palace. In
1712 Sebastiano Ricci went to England with his nephew,
Marco Ricci. They left in 1716, after
Sebastiano failed to get the commissions to
decorate the dome of St Paul's and Hampton
Court Palace. Sebastiano Ricci returned to Venice, and on
the way home Sebastiano Ricci stopped in Paris and visited
Watteau, some of whose drawings Sebastiano

Little of the decorative work Sebastiano
Ricci did in
England survives except the Resurrection in
the apse of the Chelsea Hospital Chapel and
some large but damaged canvases on the
staircase at Burlington House (now the Royal
Academy). One of the principal figures in the revival of Venetian painting in the 1700s, Sebastiano Ricci's dramatic and sumptuous work appealed to ecclesiastical and royal patrons across Europe. Ricci's painting was indebted both to Paolo Veronese and other Italian painters of the 1500s and looked ahead to the next generation of Venetian artists including Giambattista Tiepolo and Antonio Guardi. Ricci began his training in Venice but following a charge of attempted murder, Sebastiano Ricci departed for Bologna in 1681. |

| Over the next fifteen years, Ricci was almost constantly on the move and is known to have worked in Parma, Rome, and Milan. Ricci finally returned to Venice in 1696 and received many commissions in the region. Sebastiano Ricci also accepted important commissions in Vienna and Florence and in 1711 traveled to England with his nephew Marco, also an established painter. The luminous, decorative works Ricci produced for the British aristocracy secured his international reputation. In his later years, Sebastiano Ricci increasingly collaborated with his nephew, creating works across Europe until shortly before his death in 1734. | ||||||
