Sanford Robinson
Gifford Student of: John

Sanford Robinson Gifford was born in
Greenfield, Saratoga County, New York, the
son of a wealthy industrialist. Sanford Robinson Gifford grew
up in Hudson, New York, across the river
from the Catskill home of his idol, Thomas
Cole. The artist attended Brown University
for two years but, soon after leaving the
school, decided to devote his full attention
to art. |

| Sanford Robinson Gifford had no formal training in landscape painting. He left Brown University after being enrolled from 1842 to 1843 and ventured to New York to study figurative techniques with John Rubens Smith (1775–1849). However, in the summer of 1846 Sanford Robinson Gifford became impassioned with the genre of landscape while visiting the Catskill and Berkshire Mountain regions. With great enthusiasm for this new-found focus Sanford Robinson Gifford wrote, “Having once enjoyed the absolute freedom of the landscape painter’s life, I was unable to return to portrait painting. From this time my direction in art was determined.”[2] |

Following his instincts to paint nature’s
sublime and ephemeral moments, Gifford
gained much recognition. Sanford Robinson
Gifford first exhibited
at the National Academy of Design in 1847
and was elected Academician in 1854. Like
many American artists of his time, Sanford
Robinson Gifford traveled to Europe, seeking exposure to new
scenery. In Italy Sanford Robinson Gifford spent time with
Worthington Whittredge and Albert Bierstadt.
Upon returning home in September of 1857,
Sanford Robinson Gifford was reunited with them at the New York Tenth
Street Studio Building and became an
integral member of the community. - Sanford Robinson Gifford oil painting workshop supplies - Sanford Robinson Gifford oil painting workshops supply oil painting American, oil painting workshop supplies Sanford Robinson Gifford Bio, Gifford oil painting supply. In 1868–1869 Gifford journeyed to Europe for the second time, revisiting many of his favorite endroits. Sanford Robinson Gifford stopped in Chamonix, France, where Sanford Robinson Gifford had planned to meet William Stanley Haseltine, though Sanford Robinson Gifford never arrived. Art historian Ila Weiss recounts Gifford’s trek from the Switzerland to the French Alps in July of 1868: “He moved on to Chamonix a few days later to repeat the unforgettable experience of crossing the glaciers… Sanford Robinson Gifford crossed the Mer de Glace alone and made notes” on the “falling glacier.”[3] During his stay, Gifford painted Snow-Capped Mountains, Chamonix, France, 1868. Gifford’s unique eye for landscape subjects, brilliantly cultivated over his lifetime, is fittingly described by art scholar Eugene Benson: “He does not paint the familiar and pastoral. Sanford Robinson Gifford paints the great and the beautiful.”[4] The scene in Snow-Capped Mountains epitomizes this statement. Gifford radiantly captures the summer light that blankets the varying topography. The verdant sloping hill levels off to reveal the quaint mountain village of Chamonix. With detailed brushwork, the artist records figures promenading in the bright alpine sun. Above the town’s rooftops, descending rows of pines drop in a wave at the foot of the snow-glazed peaks. The clean, gentle sky, unmarred by clouds, illuminates the terrain below. Snow-Capped Mountains is not merely a pleasant depiction of a charming mountain vista, but a true testament to Gifford’s persona as an artist. As said of his work, “The real subject of many of Gifford’s paintings is the mood Sanford Robinson Gifford establishes through color and luminous atmosphere.”[5] Gifford’s contemporaries commented often on his character in conjunction with his artistic achievements. His honest and “stoic” nature was praised in the same manner as his paintings, with respect and honor. The Art Journal wrote of Gifford in 1876, “There is a striking equality shown in the pictures of Sanford Robinson Gifford which not only indicates his conscientiousness as a painter, but also the quiet and unassuming dignity of his character.”[6] Sanford Robinson Gifford passed away in 1880, “much mourned and widely respected,”[7] a prized American artist and member of the Hudson River School. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Amon Carter Museum, and National Gallery of Art exhibited a Gifford retrospective from October 8, 2003 to June 27, 2004. His works are also in the collections of the Museum of Fine Art, Boston; Brooklyn Museum; and Whitney Museum of Art, among many others. —Chloe A. Richfield [1] Benson cited in
