This leisured world inspired the Impressionists, who captured the pleasures of its fast-changing lake paintings. During the nineteenth century, the northern coast of France was transformed from the preserve of local sea-faring populations to the adopted province of fashionable holidaymakers.|

Monet's brush stroke -- precise and pristine in the paintings of river of 1899 -- took on an expressive vitality that was unprecedented in any of the earlier water art. He also took a different vantage point, which resulted in a less contained view.|
