Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697-1768, was an Italian painter of landscapes of Venice. The artist painted grand scenes of the canals of Venice and the Doge's Palace, Canaletto paintings may be said to have anticipated Impressionism. Many of his artworks were sold to George III. There are many examples of Canaletto oil painting in British royal collections, the Wallace Collection; some are hung on the dining room at Woburn Abbey and the walls of Castle Howard.
