Édouard Manet, 1832-1883, was a French painter, was one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life, and a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism. The early Manet paintings, The Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia, are considered watershed works that mark the genesis of modern art. In 1881, the French government awarded him the Légion d'honneur.
