Sir Peter Paul Rubens, 1577-1640, was a Flemish Baroque painter, well known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history oil paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. Rubens was knighted by Philip IV, King of Spain and Charles I, King of England. The commissioned Rubens paintings were mostly religious subjects and hunt scenes. In 2002, his newly discovered painting Massacre of the Innocents was sold for £49.5 million.
